(S.S) Insensitive consolation

Passing by a few of the occupied classrooms, I noticed the students either fiddling their phones or revising intently. This caused me to sigh.

“That could have been the four of us, a nice double date.”

The plan was cancelled the moment the other couple got called to the principal’s office earlier. After school, Wendy finally got a reply from Regina and I was sent to secure tissues and lunch from the canteen.

In the dimly lit classroom, both girls sat by a table, with Regina sobbing heavily and the guy nowhere in sight.

“Here are the goods Wen.”

She mouthed her thanks, cleaning Regina’s tears and patting her head. I wished she patted my head too.

“So……. Where’s he?” Regina’s crying intensifies, while Wendy slapped my arm for not reading the mood.

Calming her down, we finally learnt of the cause.

“I… (sobs) just wanted… to hug him… (sniffles)”

The embrace in school that got them caught, the parental confrontation in the office, and the break-up after. As she recounted each event, the pile of used tissues continued increasing. By the end of it, a new Mount Everest was formed.

I glanced towards Wendy, who looked back with a solemn look of guilt.

This was our fault, indirectly.

We had gotten them into the relationship, telling them it would be fine with a smile on our faces. We should have stopped them when they had far exceeded the relationship milestones that we had crossed.

We should have known better.
